Valentine's day: Love is not sex

Random Google image
Hmm... February 14 is here and that only means one thing – Valentine. Valentine’s Day as claimed and as I have always known is a day to celebrate and show love. Well, I have done a little bit of research about Valentine and found there are different stories. One of such stories suggested that Valentine's Day was created as an attempt to supersede the pagan holiday of Lupercalia although this has been contested.  Another story states that the man Valentine himself was a Roman Priest under the emperor called Claudias who persecuted the church at that particular time. The story further states that Valentine (the man) supported marriage and always encouraged soldiers to marry within the Christian church but he was caught in the year 269 AD and sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation. This was because of his stand for Christian marriage which the law didn't permit at the time. There are other stories about Valentine. You can Google it if interested.

However, I’ll like to pick on the former story above and if it’s anything to go by, then Valentine means much more than buying cards and roses and having sex under the disguise of showing love. As the story states, Valentine (the man) was a Christian who fought and encouraged Christian marriage within the church and had to die as a result.

Valentine has left its original context of love to immorality considering the way people, especially the younger generation have taken and celebrated it in the past years. We've always heard and understood Valentine’s Day as a day to celebrate and show love to our loved ones especially the opposite sex. Often times we do this the wrong way. Young boys and girls are deceived into believing that the best way to show ‘love’ on Valentine’s Day is to have sex contrary to the original meaning of Valentine real which is ‘love’ not ‘sex’. Love is not sex! Although sex can be permissible within the context of marriage but it is not the only way of showing love. The man Valentine himself understood and supported marriage. He didn't support promiscuity. So ladies please try and preserve your dignity. Valentine day is not all about having casual sex. Guys, it is not about luring your woman into giving you sex as a way to show her love to you. Love and sex are two different things. Never let anyone take advantage of you. Don’t let anyone deceive you into having sex with them as a way of showing love to them. Valentine’s Day is not a day to throw caution into the wind by having sex with every tom, dick and harry.

There are loads of different ways or expressing love such as helping others, helping the elderly, visiting the motherless babies home, visiting the sick ones at the hospitals and putting smiles on their faces, giving clothing and food items to people who you think might need them and most importantly, telling people about the greatest love of all (Jesus’ love).  Love is about putting your life on the line. If you believe in love, you can go the extra miles. Jesus did that. He loves us to the point of death. Love is a beautiful thing and can change a whole lot of things. It doesn't come cheap.  Don’t give it cheap.

Happy Valentine's day!
