Recently,
there's been lot of news about Cynthia Osokogu, a young lady of 23years old and the only daughter of
Gen. Frank Osokogu (rtd), who was tortured to death by two young men, one
of whom she met via social networking site Facebook. I'm sure you must
have read or heard about it so I'm not going to repeat it here. But just in
case you haven't heard about the news, there is a short video at the end of
this message where you can watch her killers narrate how it all happened.

However, my
major concern is that people need to be very careful about the information they
give online as well as the people they add or meet via social networking sites
and Blackberry chat groups. It is not everyone you meet through this means that
actually exist. Most of the profiles are fake set up for purposes such as this
one. Most people are not who they claim to be on social network as they are in
real lives. Just recently, a very close relative of mine was telling me how
some guys he met on Eskimo duped him of almost N100,000 by promising him discounted
goods which he thought he was buying from them. He was lucky to have gotten away with it because it could
have been worse.
Please,
please and please let’s learn from this unfortunate
incident. Don’t meet up with people you meet through social networking sites. Irrespective
of who they claim to be, if you don’t know them in person, don’t meet up with
them. The best thing is DON’T ADD THEM at all. If for any reason you have to meet up, then please go in the company of a friend. Ensure you tell one or two people about what you are up to just
in case it turns out the other way round, then at least they’ll know where to
look for you and who to hold responsible.
May the soul of Cythia Osokogu RIP
